Swans' Reid says he's ready for AFL finals
Sydney key forward Sam Reid says there is no doubt over his fitness to play in the Swans' AFL elimination final against St Kilda on Saturday night.
The 19-year-old, who had just one senior game to his name before this year, had played every game this season before being left out against Brisbane on Saturday with calf tightness.
But he said on Wednesday he had no lingering concerns.
"Last week was more precautionary than anything. I had a bit of tightness in the calf, so we didn't want to risk it before finals. I'm right this week," Reid told reporters in Melbourne at the AFL's Rising Star award.
The 195cm marking player has had a superb season to become central to the Swans' attack, which he said had surprised even himself.
But he played down his importance to beating the Saints at Etihad Stadium in what is expected to be tight, low-scoring contest.
"I think most of the year it's not like I've had a heap of the footy, but it's just creating a contest and playing my role," Reid said.
"If everyone plays their role in our team, then with our trademark footy, we'll be successful.
"It's a really exciting time, I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead, because everyone talks about how the intensity jumps up a step.
"It will be tough, but I'm looking forward to it."
Reid said the seventh-placed Swans, who have beaten the Saints, Geelong and Brisbane in the past three rounds, were confident they could push deep into the finals.
"We've been really strong, we've been playing really well," he said.
"If we continue playing like we have, I think we can go a long way."
