AFL's Demons dig deep for motivation
Dismal form, dashed finals hopes and a coach who won't be in charge next year suggest Melbourne have little left to play for, but defender Colin Garland begs to differ.
The 23-year-old's own form has held up well as his team's season has crumbled over the past month and he says the Demons have plenty to salvage from the remaining AFL rounds.
Garland acknowledged that with caretaker coach Todd Viney only a gap-filler, Sunday's clash with Gold Coast and the round 24 meeting with Port Adelaide could not be used to establish long-term team plans.
But he said individuals could gain a lot.
"There's things that we're still working on, though, that are pretty controllable individually," Garland told reporters on Thursday.
"Obviously blokes are looking to impress in these last couple of games, for even (VFL affiliate) Casey in the finals.
"Blokes still want to play some good games to finish off the year to get some confidence.
"And there's still stuff we need to work on that aren't exactly structures and stuff like that, it's more effort and intensity."
Finishing the season with a pair of victories would also be a much-needed morale-booster for the Demons, a prospect very much within reach given they are playing the AFL's bottom two teams.
But while a tiring Gold Coast have been belted by bottom-four opponents Brisbane and Adelaide in the past two rounds, Garland said Melbourne could not be too confident against any opponent on current form.
He said the Suns would no doubt be buoyed by playing on the MCG for the first time in their history.
"There is a fair bit of pressure actually to beat them, because you're sort of expected to," Garland said.
"But Gold Coast have shown if you do take them lightly, they can play well."
