Fensom may break Tongue's tackling record
Canberra coach David Furner is pleased his tireless lock Shaun Fensom is braced to break the club's record of tackles in a season.
He just wishes the club wasn't in a position where he was forced to make so many of them.
Fensom was a shining light once again in a disappointing Canberra outfit that fell 26-18 to the battling Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Park on Saturday night.
A workhorse all season, he notched up a courageous 58 tackles as the Titans enjoyed the wealth of possession in a scrappy game of rugby league.
"That's Shauny Fensom," Furner said.
"He just doesn't stop working.
"He does a lot for the team, obviously in offence and defence."
Fensom currently sits top of the tacklers list of all players in 2011, just ahead of Parramatta stalwart Nathan Hindmarsh.
Fensom now needs 43 tackles in the club's last two games to beat retiring skipper Alan Tongue's record of 1101, achieved in 2006.
"Gee I'd like to think that we weren't going for that to be honest," Furner said.
"It means that we're obviously getting into a position there to be winning games and completing sets."
Danny Galea (eye) and Mick Picker (head cut) were taken from the field with injuries in the match but are rated as strong chances of playing against Penrith on Saturday night.
But the club will be without key players Josh Dugan, Terry Campese and Matt Orford (all groin) as well as Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (bicep), Trevor Thurling (achilles), Nathan Massey (ankle), Glen Buttriss (pectoral) and Dane Tilse (quad).
