Sheedy in Europe, Choco takes the reins
Greater Western Sydney senior assistant coach Mark Williams will take full control of his side's match-day reins for the first time this weekend, with Kevin Sheedy currently in Europe visiting the club's chief sponsor.
Sheedy has made no secret of the fact he is juggling coaching duties with his duty to "recruit, market and spread the word" in a once foreign land. This week it's taken him and GWS chief executive Dale Holmes to Skoda's head office in Prague.
Williams, a former premiership coach who's working in tandem with Sheedy, hasn't had nearly as many marketing obligations.
"I'm certainly given the opportunity to spend most of my time coaching the team, that (promotion) is Kevin's big area of expertise," Williams said.
"He's a star. I wouldn't be surprised if he went straight past the peloton and crossed the line at the Champs-Elysees."
Williams has dedicated the vast majority of his time this year to developing not only the club's young talent, but the region's AFL hopefuls.
With school commitments, injuries and the AIS-AFL academy often depleting their squad, the Giants have had to blood a lot of unlisted teenagers and put a lot of faith in GWS academy coach Lachie Buszard during the 2011 North East AFL season.
"It's really difficult to get a line on our form, because every week we probably have six or seven different players playing," Williams said.
"People that look from afar would think these are consistent results, but we've played probably 70 players this year - which is just an amazing amount of people that have got opportunities.
"Sometimes you don't even know who they are until they turn up. Again this weekend we've got someone else that I've never seen or heard of before.
"We give them an opportunity, introduce them basically before the game starts and away they go with the great orange uniform on."
The Giants are currently third on the Eastern conference ladder and face Sydney's reserves on Saturday.
The match was slated to be the curtain raiser for the AFL clash at the SCG but was shifted to Blacktown due to inclement weather.
Williams played a dead bat to most recruitment questions, although suggested the mounting speculation was "fantastic".
"You hear all those players and I say 'yes please, yes please, yes please'. I haven't heard one that I don't want," he said.
"Just wait and see who Stephen Silvagni and Graeme Allan trot out. That's pretty exciting to look forward to I'm sure."
However the 52-year-old, who coached Port Adelaide from 1999 to 2010, was happier to take a page out of Sheedy's playbook when quizzed about rumoured GWS target Chad Cornes.
"He's a good friend of mine. He's planning on retiring at the end of the year, and he's had a fantastic career," Williams said.
