Pearce puts Roosters' pain behind him
Nobody is hurting more than Mitchell Pearce when it comes to the plight of the Sydney Roosters in 2011, but a chat with coach Brian Smith has eased the halfback's pain and has him focused on doing a job for NSW in Wednesday week's State of Origin decider.
Last year's grand finalists have lost eight of their past 10 matches after falling to Newcastle on Sunday, and Pearce is at a loss to explain why the side is struggling so badly.
"It's so frustrating. We talk about things like completion rates but then we go out there and fail to get the job done. I don't know what the answer is. We've had injuries but that's no excuse. We've lost our confidence, that's for sure," Pearce told AAP.
"We started well against Newcastle but we just fell in a hole. I wish I knew the answer.
"I spoke to Smithy this morning (Monday) and he said that me and Mini (Anthony Minichiello) just had to focus on this week and concentrate on the Blues, and to worry about the Roosters when we get back and that's what we have to do.
"He said it was all about preparing well for this Origin game and getting ourselves right mentally.
"I'll be doing everything I can for the Roosters when I get back but, for now, it's all about the Blues."
Pearce entered the NSW camp on Monday in Sydney for the Origin game and said there is a great feeling within the Blues' squad.
"Sometimes it can take teams a while to bond but this group of players has hit it off really well. We are a very close group," he said.
"We'll need to be tight for what we are going up there to face but we have faith in each other and we are looking forward to the challenge.
"It's a great feeling to be back in the camp. We've been away from each other for a couple of weeks and you're stinging to get back together and get ready for the next game."
