Career haul for Cloke in Magpies' win
A career-best goal haul was just a fringe benefit for Collingwood power forward Travis Cloke as the Magpies monstered Melbourne on Monday.
Cloke booted six goals in the 88-point AFL win, four of them coming in the space of 17 minutes in the second quarter as he proved far too powerful in the air for shorter, lighter opponent Jared Rivers.
His marking power in attack underlined what the Demons were missing, as Melbourne managed just six goals for the game and lacked a threatening forward target.
Significantly, five of Cloke's goals came from very close range, four of those from marking contests against Rivers, showing the value of a dominant big man.
"Five had been the previous high, so it's nice to get the six," Cloke said of his haul.
"But at the same time, it's just a number, it doesn't bother me, as long as we're winning."
He said a more significant statistic was the Magpies' 11 goal-kickers in all.
Cloke said that showed the team structure was working as it should, more than one player producing a big haul, and was a more dependable method.
The big forward did not add to his tally in the last quarter, but it was still the Magpies' most productive, as they kicked the last eight goals of the match, scored by seven different players.
"That's been a positive for us the past two years, we don't rely on one or two people to kick the goals, we have 10 or 11 people every week kicking one or two and popping up," Cloke said.
"We do have someone kicking four or five most weeks, but we don't rely on that one person."
