David Smith plans Force return
Western Force winger David Smith is determined to return in time for the 2014 Super Rugby season after falling in love with the franchise and the city.
Smith will leave the Force at the end of the season to play with French club Toulon for the next two years.
But the 24-year-old is desperate to return to Perth after that, saying he had already nutted out an informal deal with Force coach Richard Graham.
"I've already had a chat with Richard so after two years I'm definitely coming back and having another season at the Force in 2014. That's the plan," Smith told AAP.
"Me and Richard get along really well.
"He's really keen for me to come back to have another season with the Force and I'm pretty keen for that.
"The boys at the Force are like a family to me. It's been great.
"I'm going to enjoy my two years with my Toulon, enjoy my new environment.
"And hopefully after two years I'll come back more experienced and join in here again."
Smith, who was born in Samoa but raised in New Zealand, even floated the prospect of playing for the Wallabies if there were rule changes permitting such a move down the track.
"My dreams, I want to be the best rugby player I can be," said Smith, the Force's development marquee player.
"One day I'll go back to NZ and hopefully I'll make the All Blacks or if the rules change and I can play for another country I want to play for Australia or Samoa.
"You never know, we'll see what happens."
But for now Smith is focused on helping the Force notch just their fourth win of the season when they take on the Hurricanes in Palmerston North on Friday.
That will be no easy feat given the Force will be without Wallabies star James O'Connor, five-eighth Willie Ripia and halfback Brett Sheehan.
In contrast, the Hurricanes welcome back All Blacks duo Cory Jane and Conrad Smith.
Smith, who spent four seasons with the Hurricanes before moving to the Force this season, said shutting down the Hurricanes' star-studded backline would prove the key to victory.
"I don't know any secrets but I know how they play, I know the individuals well," Smith said.
"They are all class players.
"We have to try to shut down their key players.
"They've got Ma'a Nonu there and Conrad Smith will be back this week. For us we need to have a good defence line."
Graham backed his inexperienced 9-10 pairing of Mark Swanepoel and James Stannard to keep their composure in the heat of battle.
"Certainly it's a change for James going from nine to 10 but it's a position he played the majority of his time up until moving to the Force," Graham said.
"He's comfortable with the position."
