Titans favourites to snare Champion

Melbourne centre Beau Champion says he will decide between offers from several NRL clubs after confirming he is leaving the Storm at the end of the season.

Champion will enact a get-out clause, inserted into his contract because of his rushed relocation to Melbourne, to be closer to family.

Gold Coast are the favourites to snare the 24-year-old, who says his failure to settle in Melbourne does not necessarily mean he is heading back to Sydney.

"It's not just Sydney clubs. There are other clubs in the mix as well, so I'll sit down and weigh all that up hopefully at the end of this game," Champion told AAP as the NSW City Origin side arrived in Albury for Friday night's clash with Country.

Champion and his manager Sam Ayoub met Titans boss Michael Searle last month.

Gold Coast have already signed Test star Jamal Idris from Canterbury, meaning the Bulldogs are also in the market for a quality centre, while Newcastle have also been linked to Champion.

The former South Sydney star headed to Melbourne in January as part of the deal which allowed Test centre Greg Inglis to join the Rabbitohs, in the wake of the Storm salary cap scandal.

Souths freed up some room under the salary cap when halfback Chris Sandow announced on Wednesday he was leaving the club for Parramatta.

But a return to Redfern for Champion appears unlikely.

"There are plenty of clubs who have thrown their hat in the ring," he said.

"South Sydney haven't done that as yet.

"I wouldn't rule it out but, until something comes up, I'll sit down with my manager and work out what I'm going to do.

"I think it was just important that I let Melbourne know first and foremost and I want to stress very highly it wasn't anything against Melbourne. It was something I needed to do myself.

"They're a fantastic club and Melbourne is a really good city.

"I want to be back closer to my family so that's the reason why I've made that decision.

"I've had a really good time down there. They're a great bunch of blokes and Craig (Bellamy's) a fantastic coach and I'm looking to finish the season off really strongly and reward them for giving me an opportunity."

Champion will renew his right side combination with Rabbitohs winger - and extended family member - Nathan Merritt in Albury.

"Nathan's always been a big part of my football," Champion said.

"He's a fantastic player and it's fantastic that he got this opportunity as well because he's been one of the best wingers in the game for a long time."

Melbourne general manager of football operations Frank Ponissi said the club understood Champion's position.

"We respect his decision and everyone here at Melbourne Storm is confident Beau will continue to commit himself 100 per cent to the team for the remainder of the season," he said.
