Carney battle just beginning
Todd Carney's body is just about right for a return to the NRL, but the suspended Sydney Rooster remains a long way off getting back onto a football field.
Carney has returned to Roosters HQ to undergo treatment on his troublesome groin, just days after he was suspended indefinitely by the club for breaking his commitment to stay away from alcohol.
The Roosters are seeking professional help in a bid to help the Dally M medallist overcome his latest battle with the bottle, with coach Brian Smith giving no indication as to how long Carney's recovery process would take.
"We've all seen what he's capable of when he knuckles down and lives the good life, gets himself into a good place ... he's not there at the moment," Smith told Sydney radio station 95.3fm.
"There's something at the root cause of that because it's happened quite a few times in his life and we're trying to find out what that is and if we can we will help him with it, but if we can't he won't play until we do sort it out."
Smith said while Carney remained remorseful for the situation he found himself and his teammates in, he felt the skillful playmaker was committed to getting his life and football career back on track.
"He's kind of learned not to say sorry to us because we're all a bit over sorry, not just from Todd but from each other," Smith said.
"We're looking for people that can keep themselves where they need to be so they don't have to say sorry.
"He's back into his training and continues to rehab that groin injury that he's had ... from that angle I'd say he's as close as we want him to be to being able to play - from a fitness and footy health angle."
