West Coast say 100,000 members possible
West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett has flagged that the club could have as many as 100,000 members if and when the West Australian State Government can organise a new Perth stadium.
The rundown Subiaco Oval has been voted the poorest AFL venue in the country in recent seasons and with the Eagles having 55,000 members on its books, it doesn't have the capacity to seat all of them.
Nisbett is confident that a stadium will be soon agreed on by the state government and he believes the Eagles could have an unprecedented number of members for an AFL club to go with it.
"The growth could be enormous and it can be exponential," he said.
"Seated members is different to people who just want to be members and we hope that with the opportunities we'll have in regional WA and throughout Australia, that we could grow to 100,000 members.
"That would be great along with the 750,000 now who just support us. We'd just like a new stadium and we are hopeful that the Premier (Colin Barnett) will make that decision in the coming months.
"We'd wear that stadium being anywhere at this stage. Subiaco won't be redeveloped in my opinion."
Meanwhile, Eagles vice-captain Beau Waters has flown to Sydney for an operation on his elbow, having sustained a similar injury to one on his other arm that sidelined him for all of the 2009 season.
But Nisbett was confident Waters would be back this year.
"We won't know the extent of the injury until the surgeon has a look inside and we have our fingers crossed for Beau because he's had enough injury in his time," Nisbett said.
"We are really positive about him having the operation and getting ready for the latter part of the season.
"He is pretty shattered, but he's also a really positive man. He knows that he has to get this operation done and he'll be back as soon as possible."
