Aussies falter as Kiwis win Sevens crown
Australia's reputation as rugby Sevens also-rans continued with a quarter-final knockout on Sunday at Adelaide Oval.
As New Zealand emphasised their dominance with another International Rugby Sevens tournament victory, the Australians fell to Samoa in a quarter-final.
The host nation led Samoa 14-7 at halftime but were scoreless in the last half as the Samoans ran in two tries to win 19-14.
New Zealand eclipsed South Africa 28-20 in the final to claim their fourth cup of the season.
The Kiwis' victory took them to 134 overall points, 13 points clear of second placed England with Samoa (100), South Africa (92) and Fiji (88) and Australia (52) next best.
The Australian outfit was outmuscled by Samoa before also being pipped in the Plate semi-finals, losing 31-28 against Argentina.
Australian captain Bernard Foley, who missed the Plate semi with injury, was bitterly disappointed at both losses on Sunday.
"Our lack of experience and a lack of skill really let us down today," he said.
"I thought the guys were really up for this weekend but we failed to play good football.
"We've got a break now and I guess we'll look forward to trying to finish the season as we did last year, on a high."
The final two tournaments of the Sevens year take place in England and Scotland in late May.
