Tandy in good spirits: Mason
Former NRL star Willie Mason says Ryan Tandy is holding up well despite facing a possible jail sentence for his involvement in an alleged betting scam.
Mason trained with the troubled Tandy in Australia before arriving in England this week to start the next stage of his career with Super League club Hull KR.
Tandy was suspended by Canterbury last month after being charged with providing false or misleading evidence to the NSW Crime Commission, and had three fresh charges laid against him last week.
Tandy has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Asked if Tandy was in good spirits, Mason said: "He is actually, he is."
Held up by visa problems, Mason has been training in recent times with former Bulldogs team-mate Reni Maitua, who is preparing for an NRL return later this year following a two-year drug ban, and Tandy.
"Those two guys are trying to get back into league and they have been training hard," Mason said.
"I have just introduced them to the guys that I have been training with.
"Just trying to help Reni out, he is a really good mate of mine and Ryan has his own problems and I am just trying to help him out.
"I have been through the highs and lows of rugby league, Reni is a bit different because he got suspended for two years for drugs, but with Ryan he has just been getting hammered with the media.
"It is hard to stay positive with all that kind of stuff.
"But he just needs to get out there and train his arse off and prove everyone wrong on the field."
