Swans swoop on Barry Mitchell's son
Sydney have acquired the signature of the highly touted 17-year-old Tom Mitchell under the AFL's father-son rule.
Mitchell is the son of former Swans rover Barry Mitchell (170 games between 1984 and 1992), and like his father is regarded as a prolific ball-winner.
Swans coach Paul Roos described the younger Mitchell, a left-footer, in glowing terms.
"Tom is a prolific ball winner and a fantastic young man," he said.
"Tom will fit in well with the group of fresh, talented players who have come to the club recently, and we believe he will be part of a team that can take the club to a successful future."
Mitchell plans to join the Swans at the end of 2011, following the completion of his secondary schooling at Hale College in Perth, where his father is an assistant coach with Fremantle.
"I felt very welcome when I visited the club and met the players and coaches," said Mitchell.
"I've made this decision because I believe the Swans will be the right club to help me develop my game.
"I've always liked the Swans because of my family connection."
