Roosters not choking, says Carney
Senior Sydney Roosters players are adamant they can rescue their faltering NRL season by defeating fellow finals aspirants Manly on Sunday and avoiding the dreaded "chokers" tag.
The Roosters surged toward premiership favouritism on the back of a five-match winning streak, but losses to St George Illawarra, Cronulla and the Gold Coast in the past three weeks have them placed precariously near the bottom of the top eight.
The Bondi boys have crashed to sixth-place and a heavy defeat this weekend could see them drop as low as ninth.
But star five-eighth Todd Carney was quick to dispel any suggestion that the Roosters were choking.
"I don't think we're choking, we're just not getting it right in different parts of the game," Carney said on Wednesday.
"If you look at all the teams this year it's sort of happened to (everyone) and we bounced back in the middle of the year when we were losing a few.
"Hopefully we can bounce back this week, it's the time to do it.
"It's easier to say you get a win than to do it, (but) we've got a big test on Sunday and we'll be ready to go."
Enforcer Jason Ryles said the team's playmakers were still creating chances, and when the passes start to stick again, the results will fall in their favour.
"We're still creating the opportunities we were a few weeks ago, but unfortunately we're just not converting them into points," he said.
The Roosters will get a strong test of their premiership credentials at the SFS.
And Ryles has warned his team-mates not to let their season slip away meekly after a 24 rounds of hard work.
"I know better than anyone I guess how hard and long the season is and how hard it is to put yourself in this position," he said.
"For us to blow it would be very disappointing, but it's not panic stations.
"Manly's probably one of the toughest teams in the whole competition, so it's a great test for us.
"It's certainly a great preparation if we are to make the finals."
