Heavy rains disrupt Suns' training

Karmichael Hunt will have to rely on white-board diagrams to comprehend his first midfield sortie for the Gold Coast after torrential rain prevented any outdoor practical work at Carrara on Wednesday.

The Suns were restricted to using the basketball courts for ball drills after heavy showers waterlogged their training ground and made it impossible to use to step up Hunt's midfield education.

Suns coach Guy McKenna said it was only a minor setback and he would persist with playing his multi-million dollar novice in the midfield in the VFL clash with Geelong at Skilled Stadium on Saturday.

"We just have to go with it now," McKenna told AAP.

"I will catch up with him and go through the ABC of playing in the midfield.

"I'll sit with him and run through the basic insides and the principles of it.

"(I want him to him to) just go out there and play the game. See the ball and chase the ball."

McKenna said Hunt had shown enough in the previous VFL match against Sandringham that he was ready for a run in the midfield.

He has ruled out giving Hunt a defensive run-with role and instead will be told to play his own game, be creative and make himself a go-to player around the ground.

"Last weekend we saw him do that from a defensive point of view, now let's see if he can do it from a midfield point of view," McKenna said.

"If he just runs around and chases someone, that's not going to teach him anything.

"I want him to get in there and actually and see how it goes and as a go-to person ... see his quick hands and quick feet in close."

Hunt still needs to improve his endurance and is likely to be used in short burst in the midfield with his game time being self regulated.

"Most of the rotations are done on how you're feeling," McKenna said.

"It's an individual game by game situation and depends how someone feels they are playing."
