Eagles heave-ho Dockers in Wizard Cup
The West Coast Eagles claimed bragging rights over local AFL rivals Fremantle in the first round of the Wizard Cup at Subiaco Oval.
In a mistake-riddled affair, the Eagles kicked four goals to one in the third quarter to win 0.12.8 (80) to 0.11.7 (73) and earn a trip to Darwin in round two against Collingwood.
After a tight first half in which West Coast led by just five points, Beau Waters broke the game apart with three third term goals.
Two goals to Jeff Farmer in the final quarter got the Dockers within six points but they had left their run too late.
A centre break to Chris Judd with 90 seconds remaining all but secured the Eagles the win.
Midfielder Chad Fletcher was the best for the winners in his usual unobtrusive fashion.
He finished with 28 touches, while last year's Brownlow medallist Judd got better as the game went on.
Fremantle forward Paul Medhurst was taken from the ground in the third quarter after landing heavily on his neck after attempting a mark while West Coast ruckman Dean Cox left the ground in the last quarter with a bloodied face.
There was plenty of positive signs for Eagles coach John Worsfold and his match committee, particularly in the second half.
Waters, who has been used in defence for most of his short career, relished the chance to play up forward and was electric in attack.
