Broncos in good shape, says coach Henjak
Coach Ivan Henjak says Brisbane are in a much better place with 11 games of the minor premiership to fight out than last season when the club was in the midst of form and confidence slump.
After a slow start to 2010 when they were 2-6 in on the bottom of the NRL ladder, Brisbane are 7-7 and in eighth spot.
Last year after 14 rounds Brisbane were 8-6 and free falling, losing five of their next six games before storming into the finals on the back of five straight wins.
"I'm comfortable enough. You're always comfortable if your side is showing signs of playing for each other, putting lots of effort in and their attitude is good," said Henjak.
"As long as we can stay healthy and keep those things going, the rest will look after itself.
The big difference according to Henjak is the confidence within the team and the enthusiasm of the young players this year.
"Our effort and our attitude is a hell of a lot better this year than it was last year," he said.
"We didn't turn things around last year until round 22 against the Sharks."
That win came after one of the club's most embarrassing and humiliating performances, a 56-0 loss to Canberra.
Henjak said there were reasons behind Brisbane's slow start this season which had critics predicting they'd miss the finals for the first time in 19 seasons.
"There were some reasons I was explaining, but I don't think too many people were listening," he said.
"I'm not excusing some of the scorelines, but we had some injuries and we weren't able to get the same side on the paddock for a while.
"We went down and played St George with 11 regulars out."
In-form utility Ben Te'o said the club was full of positive vibes despite last weekend's loss to Penrith that ended a five-game winning streak.
"Early in the year it was all doom and gloom and people were talking about wooden spoons and things like that," said Te'o.
"We're pretty focused on keeping the proud history of the Broncos in making finals.
Te'o is in the running to take over at left centre from Alex Glenn who injured his ankle against the Panthers and is likely to miss at least a month.
However Henjak is likely to hand the cursed centre role to utility Matt Gillett for Saturday's away clash with Parramatta.
Meanwhile Gold Coast Titans skipper Scott Prince (hamstring) is hoping to make it back for the club's round 18 clash with the Wests Tigers.
Prince will have scans on Tuesday but is not expecting them to reveal anything too serious.
Luke Bailey (ankle) and Preston Campbell (bruised heel) did not train on Monday but coach John Cartwright was confident they would be right for the weekend.
Origin forward Ashley Harrison (eye) trained on Monday and should be right to tackle Newcastle after missing last Friday's one point win over the Bulldogs.
"He could have played at a pinch last Friday night but with the short turnaround and a nasty cut on his eye we didn't want to play him," said Cartwright .
