Lockyer says Henjak best man for job
Captain Darren Lockyer has endorsed the appointment of Ivan Henjak as Brisbane's next coach declaring him the "best man for the job".
Henjak was confirmed on Saturday as the man to replace head coach Wayne Bennett who has been at the helm of the Broncos for its entire 21 seasons.
"Ivan knows the place really well and the players love him, he's the best man for the job," Lockyer told AAP.
"I'm really happy about his appointment, it should deliver us a smooth transition from Wayne.
"He's got a great relationship with the players and he's learned a lot from Wayne over the years."
Lockyer had a bit to do with Henjak in the mid 1990s when Henjak coached reserve grade and believes he has made great strides as a coach.
"He's definitely ready," said Lockyer.
"He's a different coach to Wayne but he knows his stuff and I'm sure his appointment will be a very popular one with the players and everyone who knows him."
Lockyer said while the club was obviously keen to get Craig Bellamy to return from Melbourne they had come up with a fantastic choice in Henjak.
Bellamy ended speculation he would return to Brisbane in 2010 after extending his contract with the Storm until 2013 for a reported $2.5 million.
Henjak has been given a two-year contract to prove to the club he can become its second long term coach after Bennett.
Henjak said he was totally focused on his role of assistant coach until the end of the season when he will step into Bennett's boots and make his NRL debut at the age of 46.
Broncos' chief executive Bruno Cullen revealed Henjak would have the help of Bronco legends Allan Langer and Shane Webcke on his coaching team next season.
Henjak said he was yet to decide on who his assistant coach would be and he would leave those decisions until later in the year.
