Riewoldt boots 10 in Tiger triumph
Richmond star youngster Jack Riewoldt became the first AFL player in almost three years to deliver a 10-goal haul as the Tigers destroyed a sorry West Coast at the MCG on Sunday.
Even losing coach John Worsfold admitted to enjoying the Riewoldt show, as the 21-year-old kicked 10.3 in the Tigers' 19.12 (126) to 11.11 (77) victory.
It was just bottom-placed Richmond's second win of the season, but both have come in three rounds, after they belted Port Adelaide on a rain-soaked AAMI Stadium 15 days earlier.
The Tigers' improvement has coincided with a Riewoldt purple patch, the big-marking youngster taking his season goal tally to an AFL-leading 45 on the back of 30 majors in the past five rounds.
His haul included five in the first 20 minutes, four of them in an explosive five-and-a-half minute burst before the Eagles scored, with his contested marking power again a highlight, sometimes outpositioning two opponents.
"There's no words to describe him at quarter-time, he was just only a superstar by the end of the game," Worsfold said.
"But in great form, just exciting to watch, as much as he was smashing us ... he was pretty good to watch today." Riewoldt's 10th came deep in the final term, after a clever one-handed mark, making him the first player since Brisbane skipper Jonathan Brown kicked 10.1 against Carlton in 2007 to reach double figures.
Teammates swarmed as he reached the milestone - the first Tiger since retired great Matthew Richardson in 2004 to do so - a reaction Riewoldt compared to when he kicked the first goal of his career.
"It's a great feeling and that's what we're about at the club, we're one team here and we're 22 guys out there on a Saturday or Sunday working hard to get a result," Riewoldt said.
"I think that just symbolises what we're like as a group at the moment." He paid credit to teammates up the field, with first-year midfielder Dustin Martin also playing a huge hand in delivering the Tigers their fast start, with a 14-disposal opening term.
Dual best and fairest Brett Deledio was also excellent for Richmond running off halfback, while Shane Tuck and Trent Cotchin were good in the midfield.
For the Eagles, midfielder Matt Priddis battled hard, and Dean Cox won the ruck battles, while Mark LeCras worked hard for three goals.
Along with Riewoldt's strong marking form, his kicking has also improved markedly, booting five straight in the first term.
After kicking 15.15 in the first seven rounds, he has 30.10 since, crediting the work of assistant coaches Brendon Lade and Danny Daly and development coach Tim Clarke for his rapid improvement.
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick praised Riewoldt's game, but said his teammates were also steadily learning more about where to kick the ball to his advantage.
Having been tipped as wooden spoon certainties early in the season, Richmond are now just one win behind the Eagles and Adelaide, but Hardwick said ladder position was irrelevant.
