Tigers maul Warriors at Campbelltown
Wests Tigers have produced a blistering second-half performance to thrash the Warriors 50-6 in Friday's NRL clash at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
Inspired by an 11-minute hat-trick from centre Geoff Daniela, the Tigers were at their irresistible best as they scored 46 points in 40 minutes to leave the Warriors - who had looked the better side for most of the first half - shellshocked.
It also banished memories of their 50-10 defeat to South Sydney two weeks ago at the SCG.
In a game between two of the most entertaining teams in the NRL, Tim Sheens' side struggled to keep possession in the opening 35 minutes of the game and trailed 6-4 after Joel Moon had responded to Beau Ryan's eighth-minute try.
With the home crowd anticipating another evening of frustration as the hosts kept turning over the ball, Lote Tuqiri's try three minutes before the break, restored the Tigers' lead and opened the floodgates.
Robbie Farah then darted over from dummy half in the final play of the half, to turn the game on its head with Marshall's conversion giving his side a 16-6 lead.
That late surge at the end of the opening period visibly lifted the Tigers, who came surging out of the blocks after the interval with a magnificent spell, that saw former Penrith centre Daniela go over for a quickfire hat-trick.
His opener was set up by a rampaging run from exciting young prop Andrew Fifita, who fended two tackles to release Daniela who steamed his way to the line five minutes after the restart.
Daniela's second left the Warriors defence bamboozled as he stepped one way and then the other, and danced his way to the line to make the score 28-6.
And the madness continued five minutes later when English second-rower Gareth Ellis goose-stepped his way towards the Warriors line, before handing off for Daniela to add his third.
With Warriors a beaten team, the Tigers really turned on the style late with some flamboyant attacking.
Chris Lawrence added his eighth of the season with a 50-metre run before the joint-venture's other English export Mark Flanagan took advantage of some poor play from Bill Tupou to touch down.
And with the crowd baying for the half century, Tuqiri obliged with his second of the game two minutes from time.
Benji Marshall kicked seven goals for the game, but the only sour note for the Tigers was the sight of Daniela going off late in the match clutching his shoulder.
Tigers coach Tim Sheens said his side's defensive effort gave him more pleasure than their attacking form.
"We have now let in six points in each of our last two games and we have really focused on that this week ... the points scored was a bonus," Sheens said, after a performance that moved his side into fifth spot on the ladder.
"Myself and Robbie (Farah) apologised to our supporters after we let in 50 against South Sydney and we also lost our last game here at Campbelltown so it was good to turn it on for them tonight."
Sheens said Daniela had injured his neck but believed the former Panthers centre would not spend any time on the sidelines.
"He will have a bit of a headache tonight and will need an early night," he said.
Warriors coach Ivan Cleary said his young side were stunned by the Tigers second-half display, but backed them to bounce back.
"I thought for the first half we had the best of it, but they scored two tries before halftime and at 16-6 it was a flattering scoreline," Cleary said.
"But in the second half every time they shifted the ball they got a break and we lost our way.
"We are a young team and we will just have to learn from this. We have six starters out tonight and once they return we will be OK."
