Dragons thump Eels to ease the pain
It did little to erase the pain of last year's finals loss but St George Illawarra exacted a small measure of revenge on Parramatta with a thumping 30-0 NRL win at WIN Jubilee Oval on Friday night.
At the same ground where the Eels sent the then minor premiers on their way out of the premiership race, the Dragons inflicted monumental damage on Parramatta's 2010 hopes with a five tries to nil shutout.
Backing up 48 hours after starring for Queensland on Wednesday night, fullback Darius Boyd was brilliant for the Dragons, while Jamie Soward finished with a personal haul of 14 points after kick-starting the celebrations when he went over untouched seven minutes from time.
Memories of the rain-soaked battle between these two sides in 2006 in which they went to the halftime break without a point on the board came flooding as the combatants struggled to break free from the arm wrestle.
Ben Hornby finally broke the deadlock when he sent Brett Morris flying down the western touchline before the NSW winger found his skipper in support for a 6-0 lead after 27 minutes.
At the scene of his magic try in last year's qualifying final upset when he danced past a score of Dragons defenders in a scintillating run to the line, Jarryd Hayne struggled to get anything right, with one of his kicks ending up in the first row of seats in a sign of his struggles.
A Soward penalty goal extended the lead to beyond a converted try before the break, Hayne changing his boots from white to his more customary yellow numbers during the interval in a desperate bid for a change in luck.
They weren't quite quick enough to deny Morris his now obligatory try when he flew over in the corner off a delightful Darius Boyd cut-out pass, Morris now with six tries in his last four appearances at the Kogarah ground.
Dragon Beau Scott could face a trip to the judiciary after being penalised for a chicken wing tackle, but Parramatta's night went from bad to worse with skipper Nathan Cayless and Brendan Oake - a late call-up when Nathan Hindmarsh controversially withdrew after injuring his sternum in the warm-up - were put on report for a lifting tackle on Morris.
It soon got worse on the scoreboard too with the Dragons piling on the misery for the Eels, Kyle Stanley, Jason Nightingale and Soward all scoring tries within a seven minute period late in the game.
The NRL said it would investigate the circumstances surrounding Hindmarsh's withdrawal, with NRL rules preventing players being replaced following the warm-up due to a pre-existing injury.
Eels coach Daniel Anderson lamented his side's ability to match it with the ladder-leaders.
"At times it looked like men against boys - they were just more physical, had a stronger mental application," Anderson said.
"We were good for four tackles in a row and then one tackle we'd clock off and they'd punish us.
"They're a six tackle team and we're a four tackle team."
Cayless said the side was a far cry from the outfit that beat Manly at Brookvale.
"I think we've gone backwards from where we were a couple of weeks ago."
Boyd said the Maroons triumph on Wednesday night had given him a boost.
"I think that helped, I was pretty enthusiastic coming off that high," Boyd said.
"I love playing fullback for the club.
"I definitely enjoy fullback but at the same time I definitely enjoyed playing outside Greg Inglis in that Queensland side."
