Brett Morris builds Australian try tally
Few could find the tryline in the green and gold like the great Ken Irvine, but Kangaroos winger Brett Morris is now in a league of his own when it comes to scoring tries for Australia.
Morris' double in Friday night's 12-8 trans-Tasman Test win over New Zealand took the prolific flyer's tally to eight tries from just five Tests, a staggering rate of 1.6 tries per game that has never been matched by anyone who has pulled on the Australian jumper in five or more matches.
"I'm just getting a bit lucky - right place at the right time and it's nice to be scoring tries," Morris told AAP.
"I'm only on the end finishing them, I'm only doing my job - obviously the other guys are setting them up for me."
He has now scored in every Test he has played and on three occasions has finished with a double - an extraordinary feat that not even the best the game have been able to attain.
Irvine, Australia's leading tryscorer with 33 four-pointers, ran his in at a rate of one per game while modern day marvel Billy Slater saw his ratio slip to 1.4 tries per game when he was held in check by the Kiwis at AAMI Park.
Others who have played at least five Tests and have managed to score more tries than games played include Morris's St George Illawarra teammate Matt Cooper (eight tries in seven Tests), Eric Grothe snr (10 in 8), Steve Renouf (11 in 10) and former North Sydney and Canterbury winger Brett Dallas whose nine tries from just six appearances were boosted by a four-try haul against Fiji.
While Morris put his remarkable strike rate down to luck and the efforts of those inside him, there can be little doubt his speed, strength and remarkable handling give him a better chance than most to find the line.
And it extends to all forms of the game, with Morris having scored 44 goals in 36 games at all levels since the start of last year.
