Jimmy Cowan re-signs with NZRU, Otago
All Blacks halfback Jimmy Cowan has recommitted himself to New Zealand rugby beyond next year's World Cup to the end of 2012.
While most All Blacks have signed on to be part of their home World Cup, some are expected to take up lucrative European contracts afterwards - which would make those players unable to play for their country.
But Cowan said on Tuesday he would continue to be available for the All Blacks, his Super 14 side the Otago Highlanders and his provincial team.
"I really enjoy playing my rugby in New Zealand, and I'm looking forward to the next few years with the All Blacks, Southland and the Highlanders," the 27-year-old said in a statement.
The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) welcomed the recommitment of the combative half, who made his All Blacks debut in 2004 and has played 32 Tests.
"He is a passionate player who leads from the front, is a key player both on and off the field and we are delighted that he has made a commitment to New Zealand for the next three years," NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said.
