Barnes' backline position a mystery
Wallabies backline ace Berrick Barnes is looking forward to making his Waratahs debut on Saturday but is giving nothing away about which NSW and Australian jerseys he will be wearing this season.
The talented playmaker has moved from Queensland to arch rival NSW for the coming season.
Barnes is capable of playing both five-eighth and inside centre, having primarily occupied the latter position for the Wallabies in recent times.
Rumours suggested he was set to swap positions with five-eighth Matt Giteau on the Wallabies spring tour late last year, but an ankle injury prevented him playing any matches during that campaign.
With the NSW medical staff apparently happy for Barnes to resume playing, he is hoping to earn selection in their second trial against the Fijian Warriors in Orange this Saturday.
"I'm definitely keen to get out there and have a run around and certainly work my shoulders up against some big Fijians," Barnes joked.
Numerous media inquiries about which Waratahs and Wallabies jersey he would wear this season offered no revelations.
Barnes suggested it would be up to his coaches rather than himself.
"It doesn't worry me, wherever (NSW coach) Chris Hickey wants to put me this year, I will do my best to try and get competition points for us," Barnes told reporters.
He offered no further insights when asked about his preferred position in the Wallabies backline.
"I will be pushing for a Waratahs spot to start with, so that will be a good starting spot for me to be honest," Barnes said.
He expected to line up in the Waratahs first round fixture away to his former team Queensland in Brisbane and got a small taste of the reception he could expect at a trial last weekend in Lismore.
"I got a bit of a taste kicking balls back to the boys in the warm up, there was a fair amount of ribbing and sledging from the spectators," Barnes said.
"I'm sure that will be tenfold (in Brisbane)."
