Milburn takes new deal as Cats party on
Geelong veteran Darren Milburn has started the Cats' day-after celebrations on a high, agreeing to a new one-year deal to continue with the AFL premiers in 2010.
Cats chief executive Brian Cook told thousands of Geelong fans who braved wet, windy conditions to attend the club's supporters' day at Skilled Stadium that Milburn has agreed to terms to play for one more season.
And football manager Neil Balme, seen as an important figure in building a successful football department at the club, is also about to sign off on a deal to remain with the Cats.
"Darren has agreed to a contract for another year," Cook said to the cheers of the assembled crowd - the vast majority decked out in the club's blue and white colours.
"And I have a handshake with Neil Balme for two years."
Cook said it was a tremendous achievement for the club to repeat premiership success twice in three years, especially after the Cats had not won a flag since 1963 prior to the 2007 grand final win.
"It took us two generations to win a cup in 2007, and it took us two years to repeat it," Cook said.
Cats president Frank Costa said the premiership win means a lot for the city and has paid tribute to the team and football department for their ability to bounce back following the grand final defeat in 2008.
