Melbourne slumps to another loss
The cold, wet weather summed up Melbourne's form as it slumped to a 39-point loss against Geelong at the MCG.
Melbourne only avoided the shame of posting the lowest score of the season when Russell Robertson marked and goaled on the final siren.
Geelong kept the Demons scoreless in the third term on the way to the 11.18 (84) to 6.9 (45) win.
After a week of intense media scrutiny, the Demons were expected to play much harder and they did - for the first five minutes.
But the Cats steadily took control and dominated after the main break.
Geelong and Melbourne started the night on five wins apiece and the Demons could well stay on that number for the rest of the season, meaning they would receive a priority draft pick.
Melbourne's last three opponents will be finalists Port Adelaide, West Coast and Sydney, with only the Swans at home.
Geelong's defence was outstanding as Tom Harley, Jarad Rooke, Darren Milburn and David Wojcinski dominated.
Peter Riccardi kicked three goals and midfielder Cameron Ling was impressive early, while key forward Ben Graham's only fault was his inaccurate goal-kicking.
Melbourne had six players without possessions at half-time, including ruckmen Jeff White and Darren Jolly and full-back Alistair Nicholson.
