Watpac chosen to manage GC AFL stadium
Watpac has been named as the successful managing contractor for the Gold Coast's new AFL stadium.
Plans for a redeveloped 23,000-seat stadium for Cararra were announced earlier in the year by Labor as an election promise.
The government has committed $60 million to the $130 million project, jointly funded by the federal government and council and to be maintained by the AFL.
Premier Anna Bligh on Thursday told state parliament Watpac was chosen during a competitive tender process for the iconic project.
The win follows Watpac work on the Gold Coast's Skilled Park at Robina - home of rugby league's the Titans and the A-League's Gold Coast United.
Ms Bligh said that stadium was widely recognised as one of the best regional stadiums in the country.
She said the Cararra stadium was expected to create around 350 full-time equivalent jobs during construction and more once the AFL team joined the league in 2011.
