Five Eagles take flight for Origin II
Manly's 2008 NSW snubbing appears to be a distant memory with the Sea Eagles boasting five members in the Blues side announced for State of Origin II on Monday night.
A year after largely turning his back on the Sea Eagles stars, Blues coach Craig Bellamy has called upon Manly's warriors to level the 2009 series as Queensland seek an historic fourth successive title.
Winger David Williams and backrower Glenn Stewart were selected to make their debuts while Anthony Watmough was recalled for the first time since 2005 to join Origin I prop Brent Kite and centre Jamie Lyon.
Stewart had been selected for Origin I but was ruled out through suspension.
Last year the Sea Eagles were bemused at their Origin snubbing with only fullback Brett Stewart picked in the NSW side.
But after winning the 2008 NRL premiership and resurrecting their horrendous start to 2009 by winning four of their past five games, the Sea Eagles can now boast the highest representation in the NSW side.
Bellamy admitted it was the Sea Eagles' club combinations which won them selection for game two.
In particular he has turned to Williams and Lyon on the right edge to stop Queensland star Greg Inglis, the two try hero from game one.
"The thing probably in his favour there was his combination with Jamie at club level," said Bellamy.
"That certainly was a real positive for us, we thought.
"He has been playing great the last couple of years.
"We don't think he is too far away from it, hopefully he will come in and play well."
Meanwhile Bellamy hopes tackle-breaking backrower Watmough can provide some damage to his forward pack replacing Anthony Laffranchi on the interchange.
"We just think Anthony was very close to the first game," said Bellamy.
"He was our 18th man (for Origin I) and has been in really good form since the first Origin game and we think he will add something to our team."
