Lewis sees something special at Panthers
Penrith stalwart Luke Lewis says his young teammates have helped him rediscover his love for rugby league and believes the Panthers are on the cusp of something special.
Lewis made a dramatic U-turn on a lucrative move to South Sydney last year to remain at the club he helped win a premiership in 2003 and the 25-year-old utility is glad he made the decision to stay and play alongside the likes of Michael Gordon, Lachlan Coote and Wade Graham.
"Having been here a few years and watching them rise through the grades ... they are so talented and it is so exciting as a player to be part of this team," Lewis said.
Despite this abundance of talent in their ranks, Lewis believes a lack of experience and basic mistakes have been their undoing in some games this year, including last week's 38-18 loss to Brisbane.
"We are not far from where we want to be," Lewis said.
"We have a lot of young guys who are really enthusiastic but, as a team, we just have to work on knowing what to do first and earn the right to play football.
"This is rather than just trying to play football because that has led to mistakes and when you do that against a side like Brisbane you will lose."
The Panthers host Queensland opponents again on Monday with the high-flying Gold Coast Titans visiting CUA Stadium.
Lewis is not surprised by their fine start to the season and expects John Cartwright's side to be in the top eight come September.
"They are a pretty decent side all around the park and play good footy and deserve to be where they are," he said.
"We are expecting another tough encounter but it is up to us to start producing good performances regularly at home where over the past few seasons we have not given our crowd much to cheer about.
"I don't know why that is. We just need to step up the intensity as we did against the Tigers and Manly and produce those sort of results on a regular basis."
The versatile Lewis was named in the 40-man NSW provisional State of Origin squad this week and is determined to add to his three Origin caps in any position.
"It's always an honour to be named in the squad. The sky blue jersey is a such a big thing for me ... I have had a taste before and I want it again.
"I am happy to play anywhere. I enjoy five-eighth, lock and being put in the second row. It is whatever suits the team best."
