Maroons must avoid slow start: Hannant
Queensland prop Ben Hannant says the Maroons must overcome their notorious slow starts to the State of Origin series if they want to make their quest at history easier.
Chasing a record fourth straight series crown, Queensland have allowed their 'home' game to be played at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium next Wednesday and Hannant says that's a danger if the Blues take a 1-0 lead into game two in Sydney.
It has been over a decade since Queensland won the opening game of a series on foreign territory - their last a 24-23 win at the Sydney Football Stadium in 1998.
NSW were the last team to win an away opener, beating Queensland 25-12 at Suncorp Stadium in 2003 when current prop Luke Bailey was named man of the match.
This is the first time in 30 years of Origin that a neutral venue has hosted the series opener and Hannant says it's important the Queenslanders don't let NSW skip away to victory as they did in game one last year.
"We're looking towards Melbourne at the moment and making sure we get off to a good series start," he said.
"We've struggled the last couple of series in the first games so it's a big game. We need to get off to a great start and game two is in Sydney and it's really important we do get off to a good start."
Queensland have no injury concerns heading into the opener with centre Justin Hodges completing the full session on Thursday, casting aside doubts over his hamstring problem which has kept him sidelined since the May 8 Test match.
However there was one moment of worry as hooker Cameron Smith collided with Billy Slater and clutched at a sore left knee, but still completed the session.
Queensland worked on their defensive structures at training and Hannant says they're expecting an all-out attack approach from the Blues.
"We're just doing everything we can to prepare for the game. Seeing where their strengths are, how we can attack and how we're going to defend them," he said.
"There's plenty that's been identified. They have a very attacking style football team and are going to throw a lot at us. We just have to be on our game defensively to handle it."
Enjoying career-best form after moving from Brisbane to the Bulldogs in the offseason, Hannant says he's ready to take on a bigger role within the Maroons side after going close to Test selection earlier this month.
"I'm willing to do whatever role they've got in store for me," he said.
"The move to Sydney has been fantastic and I'm really enjoying the footy I'm playing there.
