Geelong's Mooney back to bad habits
Another disciplinary lapse has cost Geelong their full-forward for Friday night's AFL blockbuster against the Western Bulldogs after Cameron Mooney returned to his bad old habits.
Mooney pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a charge of striking North Melbourne's Scott Thompson, and his one-game ban will mean he sits out the 14th game of his career due to suspension.
Mooney was cited for his strike to the back of Thompson's head at Skilled Stadium last Saturday when the Cats spearhead made a late and crude attempt at spoiling from behind.
His latest suspension will rob the unbeaten Cats of their main marking target in attack, as Mooney has booted 17 goals this season, to be second in the club's goal kicking, behind only Steve Johnson (21).
However, Mooney's absence will be offset by the likely returns of half-forward Paul Chapman (back) and star onballer Gary Abeltt (adductor) for the clash against the third-placed Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.
Although he has a long list of indiscretions, Mooney's on-field discipline had improved in recent seasons, as this ban was his first since 2006, when he was suspended for a total of five games for four separate incidents.
Mooney's guilty plea means the tribunal will not sit on Tuesday, as the rest of the players cited by the match review panel from round eight have all agreed to pay fines.
Bulldogs star Adam Cooney, Melbourne's Lynden Dunn, Sydney's Martin Mattner and Carlton's Eddie Betts will all be docked $1,950 for making negligent contact to umpires during games.
Port Adelaide's Chad Cornes and Richmond's Daniel Jackson were both fined $900 for wrestling each other at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.
