Hunt's stomach upsets new Broncos' coach
Rookie Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak is facing a major problem just one game into his tenure with fullback Karmichael Hunt racing the fitness clock for the club's first NRL game next month.
Henjak made a winning debut as Wayne Bennett's successor with Brisbane coming from 12-0 behind to beat a young Canberra side 30-16 in front of a 10,500 crowd at Dolphin Oval on Saturday night.
But Hunt's early departure after tearing abdominal muscles attempting to score put a dampener on the night with the 22 year-old fullback to undergo scans on Monday.
Hunt, weighing up his future following reports of a $1 million-a-season offer from a Japanese rugby union club, said his stomach was not as painful on Sunday and rated himself a chance of playing in the NRL season opener against the Cowboys on March 13.
"We'll know a bit more on Monday when we get him scanned but he's got an abdominal tear," said Henjak.
"Hopefully he'll be right for the start of the season but we're probably looking at two or three weeks.
"It's not long term and I'm sure we can cover that."
Impressive young speedster Gerard Beale would be a possible replacement if Hunt's stomach scans reveal anything more than minor internal damage.
Henjak already has a backline headache with Justin Hodges expected to miss the first few games following off-season shoulder surgery.
Beale, who can play fullback, wing or centre, Antonio Winterstein, who has looked good in Brisbane's two trial wins, and super slick winger Jharal Yow Yeh have all impressed Henjak enough to gain a start against the Cowboys.
Henjak, critical of his players' first half ball security, was pleased with the number of scoring opportunities they created .
"They got the jump on us early but we could have been three tries up but we blew all of them," said Henjak.
Halfback Peter Wallace's kicking game was outstanding while young hooking hopeful Andrew McCullough looked good with his raking kicks.
"Pete was good and I though a few of Andrew's long kicks were good."
Prop Nick Kenny consolidated his starting spot with a solid game up front.
"I was really pleased with Nick Kenny. He played some minutes which was a pleasing sign for a guy who's put on a fair bit of weight in the pre-season to produce those quality minutes," said Henjak.
Draw card Israel Folau delighted the big crowd scoring a try in his first appearance for the Broncos.
The club hosted a fan day at Red Hill on Sunday with an estimated 2000 fans hunting autographs and photos.
