Scotland call up flyhalf prodigy Jackson
Twenty-year-old Glasgow flyhalf Ruaridh Jackson has been given his first call-up to the full Scotland squad as part of a 33-man selection for the Six Nations opener again Wales.
Uncapped Edinburgh prop Geoff Cross, 26, was also included in head coach Frank Hadden's squad for the February 8 meeting with the defending champions at Murrayfield.
Scotland will start their build-up to that match in earnest when the players convene for a three-day training camp from Monday and Hadden claimed competition for starting places was fiercer than ever in the wake of landmark European Cup wins for Glasgow and Edinburgh at the weekend.
Glasgow claimed a famous victory at Toulouse while Edinburgh overcame another French side, Castres, in the Scottish capital.
"I'm delighted by the number of players who are putting up their hands as genuine candidates for international selection," Hadden said.
"The victories of both pro-teams last weekend and the manner in which they achieved their results is very encouraging.
"Momentum is vital in such a short round of matches so we know the importance of starting well and getting a big Scottish crowd behind us.
"Wales are the current Grand Slam champions. Their regional format is working efficiently and paying dividends. They are a settled, star-studded side and they proved with their win against Australia during the Autumn Tests that they are currently one of the best sides in the world."
