MCC, AFL to hand Demons $2 million
Embattled Melbourne have been handed a $2 million support package from the AFL and the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC).
The announcement was made on Friday after the MCC agreed to boost its funding support of the Demons to $1 million.
It followed the approval by the AFL Commission on Monday of a recommendation to increase the annual special distribution funding from $250,000 to $1 million.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the decision highlighted how much both organisations wanted the Demons to be strong financially.
Demons chief executive Cameron Schwab said the input from both the AFL and the MCC was vital to the ongoing future of the club.
"The relationships we have with the AFL and the MCC are critical to the future of our football club and this funding is vital to the future of the club," Schwab said.
"Our eventual goal is to get to the stage where we are not reliant on this support and with the support of our members and supporters we think we can achieve that in the future."
