Storm's Hoffman a chance to play Broncos
NRL premiers Melbourne will endeavour to produce their second medical miracle in a week, with backrower Ryan Hoffman to be given time to prove his fitness for the Storm's do-or-die final on Saturday night.
Hoffman remains a chance to play in his side's sudden-death final against Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium after scans showed no structural damage to his troublesome ankle.
Hoffman re-injured his ankle in the Storm's shock 18-15 qualifying final loss to New Zealand in only his second match back following a similar injury.
But the Storm said the Test backrower had not been ruled out of the Broncos match with what has been diagnosed as a high ankle strain.
"Ryan's injury is still at the lower end of ankle strains, however he is experiencing slight pain and swelling," Storm high performance unit manager Mary Toomey said.
"We'll do everything we can to get him right for Brisbane.
"If he isn't ready for this Saturday he's likely to be fit for the preliminary final should we make it."
If Melbourne could get Hoffman into the Broncos clash, it will mirror their effort last weekend with Dallas Johnson.
Johnson injured his knee a fortnight ago and looked set to miss at least a week, but played against the Warriors last weekend.
The news was better for Melbourne prop Jeff Lima, who has recovered from a knee injury sustained against the Warriors and will be fit to play against the Broncos.
Lima took part in the Storm's recovery session in Melbourne.
