Broncos must up the intensity again

Greg Eastwood and Sam Thaiday believe Brisbane need a lift in intensity against a wounded Warriors side to keep their quest for a top four spot rolling.

Brisbane, who suffered an unexpected blow with centre Justin Hodges charged with making an obscene gesture to a match official, are currently two wins outside the top four.

No team has won the premiership from outside the top four since the introduction of the McIntyre finals system in the 90s.

A win against the Warriors on Saturday is vital if the Broncos are to keep pressuring for a top four spot and guaranteed home semi-final.

"The Warriors are very physical and over there you know they're going to come after you," Eastwood said.

"We know we have to turn up the intensity again and match their physicality.

"You know you're going to be very sore after you play them because they're big and hard and like to smash you."

Thaiday said while the Warriors didn't travel well, they were a very difficult side to beat at home.

"They're very unpredictable but you know they're going to have their big forwards coming at you," said Thaiday.

"They like to turn it up against the bigger sides and with their fan base it's always tough over there.

"I think defence will be a priority at training this week."

Eastwood and David Stagg have shared the Mr Fixit void since the departure this season of utility ace Shaun Berrigan.

Eastwood's work on his fitness, including curbing his enjoyment of fast foods, paid off at the weekend when he had to jump into the dummy half role after hooker Michael Ennis was injured in Brisbane's 34-6 win over Canberra.

"I had to play a bit in the ruck at hooker when Mick (Ennis) went off," said Eastwood.

"It was another experience for me.

"I didn't think I went too bad."

Eastwood is keen for a big game on Saturday to impress New Zealand selectors looking for World Cup players.

While he has been unable to tie down a permanent position with the Broncos, his utility value and strike capabilities have kept him in the side.

"If I continue to play well (for Brisbane) I'm sure I can get a (Test) spot somewhere," he said.
