Coote deserved try ... maybe: Elliott
Penrith coach Matt Elliott says the referees got it right but he is still left wondering if the technical interpretation of the rules should have disallowed a spectacular try.
Prop Brendan Worth was denied a potential match-winner in the 64th minute in Friday night's 12-12 draw with Brisbane in the NRL clash at CUA Stadium.
Eighteen-year-old debutant Lachlan Coote flew to grab a Wade Graham bomb before Worth crashed over but the forward was ruled to have been inside the 10m as his fullback contested the ball with Brisbane's Josh Hoffman.
"You sit back there and look at that piece of skill (Coote) put on for that no-try and you look at the part that other player (Worth) played in it and it's a little disappointing," Elliott said.
"I can't debate the ref's interpretation, that was 100 per cent right, but you just sort of wonder what impact did he have on that play. We can talk about that for 1,000 years."
Elliott's rival Wayne Bennett was more than happy to explain the interpretation after coaches received an email from referees boss Robert Finch during the week.
"Obviously what's been happening, players have been leading off well in front of the play-the-ball area and getting an advantage and that was always the interpretation of the rule and they're obviously just reinforcing it," Bennett said.
"So as soon as I saw the video come up and I realised where the guy was I knew it was going to be a penalty because that was an instruction this week.
Bennett is breathing a sigh of relief with the end of the Broncos' annual State of Origin player drain in sight.
Brisbane were without nine injured, suspended or representative first-graders on Friday night and have collected just one point, from the draw, in their three Origin-affected games.
"With the bye coming up (next week) we'll have picked up five points out of six points in the last three weeks so that's helped us enormously in a very tough period in the season for us," Bennett said.
"It's the third time we've played together with all of our players missing.
"There was a bit of confidence from each game.
"We gave the Sharks a bit of a fright and probably got dusted a bit by the Dragons but I think everyone was confident here because we have had these games together."
In-form Broncos hooker Michael Ennis picked up an ankle injury on Friday night but club officials were confident he will recover in time for the clash with the Bulldogs in two weeks.
Penrith's Luke Rooney is in doubt for next weekend's match-up with Parramatta after straining a hamstring, while Michael Jennings (foot), Shane Rodney (calf) and Coote (neck, wrist) are all expected to recover.
