Cats thrash physical Power

Geelong weathered a physical barrage from Port Adelaide to thrash the Power 15.18 (108) to 7.7 (49) in their AFL clash at Skilled Stadium.

While Power players started a scuffle before the opening bounce and crashed into their opponents at any opportunity, the Cats preferred to do all their damage on the scoreboard.

After Port led 2.0 to 1.4 at the 11-minute mark, the visitors managed just another two goals before three-quarter time.

The Cats buried them in the third quarter, which they won 6.4 to 1.0, taking the ball from the middle time and time again, with only the occasional sloppy piece of play in attack preventing them kicking more goals.

They still led by 62 points at the last change, before taking their foot off the pedal to narrowly lose the last quarter.

Gary Ablett and Joel Selwood led the way in the midfield, both showing plenty of courage to regularly win the ball and send Geelong forward.

Ablett was not put off by regularly being knocked to the ground and niggled by Power players, picking up 32 touches and laying five tackles.

Only some unusual inaccuracy in front of goal stopped him from having an even greater impact on the game, finishing with 1.3.

Selwood threw himself into the game with fearless abandon to pick up 30 touches and lay six tackles.

Tagger Cameron Ling was highly effective, preventing Port gun midfielder Shaun Burgoyne from having any notable impact, while picking up plenty of touches himself.

Andrew Mackie picked up plenty of touches running out of defence, while Paul Chapman was a standout up forward with four goals.

The only bad note for the Cats was the report of Steve Johnson in the second quarter, seemingly for making contact with his head to Port's Troy Chaplin, although a replay suggested if there was any contact it was very minor.

The Power's Daniel Motlop could be in more serious trouble for appearing to strike Cats defender Harry Taylor off the ball late in the third quarter.

Motlop finished with three goals for the Power, who had few standout players.

Peter Burgoyne picked up plenty of touches off halfback, Steven Salopek performed well through the midfield while Alipate Carlile performed solidly on Cameron Mooney at fullback.
