Power's premiership defence in tatters
Port Adelaide's AFL premiership defence was in tatters on Saturday night after the Power was thumped by 79 points by a resurgent Geelong.
The Cats had an astonishing 122 more possessions than the visitors and not even the darkness that descended on Skilled Stadium during a wet and wild third quarter could disguise the disappointing nature of 10th-placed Port's performance.
The Power has been victorious in just one of seven away games this year, and will probably have to win five of its remaining six matches just to qualify for the finals.
With Jimmy Bartel best afield with 32 disposals, 10 marks, 12 tackles and three goals and Kent Kingsley booting five goals from full-forward, the Cats careered away to win 18.18 (126) to 7.5 (47) and reignite their own flag aspirations.
"We haven't had a great six weeks but if you'd said to us we would be 10-6 and equal second or third on the ladder, you'd certainly take that," said Geelong coach Mark Thompson.
"I think our season starts pretty much from this day forward.
"We've got to do a lot of things right and hope that we get back to that consistent, hard and exciting brand of footy that we're capable of playing."
Geelong also got good performances from Darren Milburn in an unfamiliar role up forward, Josh Hunt, Paul Chapman and ex-Port fringe player Paul Koulouriotis.
Warren Tredrea was Port's only multiple goalscorer with three, but even he lowered his colours to Matthew Scarlett on a day when little went right for the visitors.
"We struggled to play in the conditions, we played poorly, there's no excuses and certainly our form on the road has been a disaster this year," said Port coach Mark Williams.
