No Blues ruse to keep Perry
Shattered NSW prop Josh Perry was forced out of the second State of Origin game after Blues officials put the "best interests of the game" before their own series aspirations.
Perry was named in an unchanged Blues squad Monday morning, but only hours later was on his way back to Newcastle after entering an early guilty plea to two charges from the NRL judiciary.
The 22-year-old was suspended for one week on two offences - grade one striking and grade one careless high tackle - arising from Newcastle's Friday night win over St George Illawarra.
Perry could have played if Blues selectors had taken a leaf out of Queensland's book from last year and left him out of the original squad, instead naming a TBA (To Be Announced) on the bench.
But they elected to choose Perry and run the risk of his being charged.
He was - and now finds himself out of Origin II, with Bryan Fletcher drafted into the Blues squad.
"Our view is we don't think it's in the best interests of the game," NSW Rugby League chairman Colin Love said.
"They did it. We won't do it."
The Maroons left a spot vacant for Lote Tuqiri last season by naming TBA on the wing for Origin II.
Tuqiri was subsequently suspended for one week on a dangerous throw charge and served his suspension for the Broncos freeing him to play in Origin.
But Queensland Rugby League general manager Ross Livermore said the Maroons had decided against doing that again.
"We felt they decided to do the judiciary after the team was announced and we'd abide by that," Livermore said.
"We weren't going to use a TBA. We used it (last year), we probably wouldn't use it again."
That was cold comfort for Perry, whose Origin career was stalled after one game.
"I'm absolutely shattered", he said.
"I had one of the best weeks of my life last week.
"It's the sort of thing you play football for and now I will be watching from the sideline."
The Blues could face further changes later this week, with injury concerns remaining over Craig Fitzgibbon (eye), Jason Ryles (shoulder) and Jamie Lyon (hamstring).
Ryles and Lyon declared themselves certain starters, but Fitzgibbon remained in doubt after undergoing minor surgery Monday morning.
NSW selectors discussed shadow players, with veteran Wests lock Terry Hill among those in consideration for a recall if any players succumb to their injuries.
"It is a lot better than yesterday which is pretty positive," Fitzgibbon said.
"The doctor is confident, it's a matter of what the specialist says.
"I guess you could say at the moment it's looking pretty good."
The Maroons could have done with Tuqiri today as they pieced together a side minus the injured Justin Hodges (knee), Paul Bowman (knee), Chris Flannery (shoulder) and PJ Marsh (neck).
Penrith lock Scott Sattler and North Queensland fullback Matthew Bowen won places on the bench while Travis Norton and Michael Crocker came into the starting side.
"Mate, I've been dreaming about this for years, probably since about 1998 when I figured I might be playing well enough to make it," Sattler said.
"So I've been wishing along that line. Now it has happened I'm so excited I'm shaking like a leaf."
NSW coach Phil Gould warned the Maroons would be stronger in Origin II despite their changes.
"They look at it as a three-game series," Gould said.
"Queensland will get stronger the longer the series goes.
"They'll be stronger again in game two and even stronger in game three."
