Raiders to check on betting claim
Canberra has promised to look into a gambling allegation against the National Rugby League club's players this week but coach Matthew Elliott is confident his competition leaders have no case to answer.
NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley spoke with Raiders chief executive Simon Hawkins on Sunday morning after the allegation surfaced in a Sydney newspaper (Eds: Sun-Herald).
The Canberra boss told Annesley there was no evidence of gambling by players, but he will remind the players this week of their responsibilities under NRL guidelines.
The paper alleged that several Canberra players had gambled on the outcome of matches last weekend, including the Raiders' win over South Sydney.
Under NRL rules, players are not allowed to bet on games and the club could face a fine if the allegations were proven.
"It's certainly news to me," Hawkins said of the allegation, which was unsourced and appeared in a sports gossip column.
"We'll have a look at it but it's hard with such a general thing.
"The players are well aware of their obligations under NRL rules with regard to betting on games.
"I'd be disappointed if there was any truth to it."
Annesley said he had left the matter in the hands of Hawkins, but the league would take action if it received any evidence that Canberra players had placed bets on matches.
