Lehmann might retire if not SA captain
Darren Lehmann has hinted he would be tempted to quit the game if he lost the South Australian captaincy, moments after West Australian counterpart Justin Langer had said he was almost certain to play on next season.
The Redbacks were desperately poor for the vast majority of season 2006-07, taking until their final match to register a win in the Pura Cup and failing to figure in the one day final, having been installed as favourites to win both at the start of the season.
SA coach Wayne Phillips is widely expected to be dumped as a result of these failures, while Lehmann is also under scrutiny as the mentor of a team that looked to have forgotten many of the game's fundamentals.
Lehmann's own record with the bat (607 runs at 40.47, one century) was mediocre by his usual standards, but he insisted that he would go on in 2007-08 - provided he is kept on as captain, a role he has held on and off since 1997.
"I'd like to captain the side, I'm certainly not going to give it away just because you have one bad year, you can't blame the captain or coach as such," he said.
"The board will make their decisions as they normally do, but I certainly would like to captain again, I enjoy doing the role, we've got a young bunch of kids and hopefully I try to guide them in the right way.
"There's a lot of things I'd like to change next year."
Asked whether he would go on as a mere player, Lehmann was non-committal: "Good question, I certainly need to have a look at my options I suppose but that's really for the board to decide and we'll see what happens over the winter."
Langer, meanwhile, said his side's narrow failure to reach the cup final would most likely keep him around for another season.
"After today I'd be very surprised if I didn't play on next year," he said.
"(Pura Cup) is a huge incentive, I'm sure that's why Darren keeps playing."
