Flying Kangaroos undefeated
Written off by many at the start of the season, the Kangaroos continued Dean Laidley's dream start to his AFL coaching career with a 23-point victory over Geelong at Skilled Stadium.
While last season's grand finalists Brisbane and Collingwood remained unbeaten with weekend victories, the Kangaroos joined them as the only other team with a perfect record after round two.
After losing dual premiership coach Denis Pagan and rookie coach Laidley promising a year of rebuilding and blooding youth, most thought the Kangaroos would be a work in progress this season.
Instead the baby Roos will meet the game's benchmark Brisbane on Saturday night at Telstra Dome in an unlikely top-of-the-table clash to show exactly where they stand in the AFL pecking order.
"Now we play the best team of all and I think this is the opportunity the football club's been waiting for and I've been waiting for," Laidley said.
Celebrating his 200th AFL game, David King kicked two long second half goals from the boundary to help the Roos beat error-prone Geelong 13.16 (94) to 9.17 (71) and cap the day for he and fellow 200-gamer Saverio Rocca.
Collingwood also moved to two-from-two on Friday night at the MCG, holding off a determined Carlton 16.11 (107) to 13.13 (91).
By contrast, last season's minor premier Port Adelaide is in trouble - winless, losing star midfielder Josh Francou for the season and facing three weeks without forward spearhead Warren Tredrea.
Francou tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a tackle from Brisbane's Michael Voss in Saturday night's 10-point loss to the Lions at AAMI Stadium.
He faces a knee reconstruction later this week and 12 months out of the game.
