Rogers eyes Wallaby No.15 shirt
Mat Rogers is ready to throw off the tag of Wallaby super sub and has declared his intention to wear the fullback jersey in every World Cup rugby game.
He can take a step toward that goal on Saturday night when he opposes regular first choice No.15 Chris Latham in the Super 12 clash with Queensland at Aussie Stadium.
The NSW Waratah has played all of his Super 12 rugby at fullback, but in his seven Tests has filled in just about everywhere in the backline.
Latham missed the Wallabies' end-of-season tour with injury but Rogers was unable to make inroads in his claim on the fullback jersey when he damaged his ribs in the first game.
But he's hoping to change that, starting this weekend.
"Without any shadow of a doubt that's my primary goal for this year, to start every game of the World Cup wearing No.15," Rogers said.
"It's going to be a good game, hopefully I'll play better than Chris.
"Although Queensland haven't been winning, he's been in some pretty good form so I'll have to be on my game."
Rogers was also quick to point out it wasn't a two-horse race: "A lot of people seem to be forgetting about Joe Roff playing fullback down at the Brumbies, he's probably playing better than either of us."
Roff, however, will also be considered as a winger where he played so many fine games for Australia before last year's sabbatical in France.
