Waugh given time to prove fitness
Injured NSW spearhead Steve Waugh will be given until the last minute to prove his fitness for Sunday's ING Cup cricket final.
Likewise, the Blues will wait until the morning of the competition decider against Western Australia in Perth to decide whether wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin plays.
Waugh injured his left hamstring while running between wickets in the Blues' 39-run win over South Australia on Sunday, which put NSW into the final.
Scans have revealed the injury was relatively minor.
Waugh was expected to take seven to 10 days from the time of the injury to recover, meaning the Blues were relying on a best case scenario for him to play.
Haddin was expected to take the same amount of time to get over a strained right hip flexor muscle he suffered while fielding against the Redbacks.
NSW team physiotherapist Pat Farhart said the pair faced plenty of intensive treatment over the next few days.
Their rehabilitation would include bike riding, swimming, deep massage therapy and strengthening exercises.
But he was confident they would pull through in time for Sunday's match.
"It's definitely going to depend on the next few days of treatment," Farhart said.
"I'm confident they'll both get up but it's going to be a lot of hard work between now and then for both of them.
"It won't be much fun. They've both been through it a few times, I think they know what to expect."
Waugh and Haddin will travel to Perth with the team on Friday and, even if they miss the one-day final, both are expected to be fit for the Blues' Pura Cup match starting at the WACA Ground on February 27.
Waugh scored an impressive 71 off just 58 deliveries to be named man-of-the-match against South Australia in a game NSW had to win to make the one-day final.
The Blues will be trying to secure their third consecutive domestic one-day title.
