Windies begin World Cup training
West Indies cricket captain Carl Hooper sounded optimistic today as his team began a two-week training session in Antigua to prepare for next month's World Cup in South Africa.
"We have a very good chance of doing well," said Hooper.
"I think a lot of teams will be folly to underestimate us. We have been playing good one-day cricket for the last year now."
Hooper said he was hopeful the 15-man team would make it to the World Cup second round's Super Six.
"I think over the last three months we have shown we have got the measure of teams like New Zealand and India certainly in one-day cricket, I hope that continues," Hooper said.
The 36-year-old said he was confident he had fully recovered from recent operations on both knees which forced him to miss his team's tour of Bangladesh early last month.
"I've been back to training for two and a half weeks now so hopefully I can put in the final touches before we head off to South Africa," he said.
While it was important to have Brian Lara back on the team, all players would have to take responsibility, Hooper said.
"It is going to take a team effort, I don't think we can highlight one or two individuals," he said.
Lara returned to competitive cricket after a prolonged illness in the annual four-day Gerry Gomez North-South Classic in Trinidad, where he scored 71 not out off 72 balls to lead his North team to an eight-wicket win on Saturday.
