Haddin leads Blues to thrilling win

Brad Haddin fizzled in heat wave conditions and Dominic Thornely came in from the cold to propel NSW to a one run win over Western Australia and top spot on the domestic one-day cricket table.

Chasing 268 at the SCG, WA needed nine off the final over from Thornely, who hadn't bowled previously in the innings.

The medium pacer kept his nerve, despite being smashed for six by Bret Dorey off the penultimate delivery.

With two required off the final ball, Thornely had Dorey caught by Daniel Christian at deep backward square leg.

As the temperature nudged 40 degrees in mid-afternoon, Haddin (115 off 102 balls) blazed the ball across the turf in the Blues' first day-night match at the SCG in four summers.

His partnership of 146 off 153 balls with Thornely (60 off 81) set up a total of 267, despite the Blues losing their last seven wickets for 18 in just 30 balls.

Haddin cracked nine fours and three sixes in his fourth domestic one-day century, though it was his first at the SCG.

He added 63 for the third wicket with younger Daniel Christian (49 off 48), who scorched eight well struck boundaries.

Sean Ervine (4-51 off 9.4) and Steve Magoffin were the pick of the WA bowlers.

Sparked by some early aggression from Shaun Marsh (43 off 34) and useful contributions from Chris Rogers (30 off 39) and debutant Luke Pomersbach (33 off 47), WA maintained a good run rate despite losing wickets regularly.

When the mercury dropped dramatically during the evening, it was spinners Nathan Hauritz, (3-42 off 10) and Jason Krejza (3-41 off 10), who stepped up for NSW.

Krejza hadn't yet played for NSW this season as he waited behind Stuart MacGill.

He only received a call up to the team on Thursday after all-rounder Moises Henriques withdrew with a leg injury.

The Warriors needed 37 from the last five overs, but the dismissals of Brad Hogg (38 off 28) and Adam Voges (68 off 94) within the space of four Hauritz deliveries seemed to have ended their challenge.

Dorey kept the Warriors hopes alive with a quickfire 25 off 12 balls, belting sixes off Nathan Bracken and Thornely.
