Ireland downs Namibia in RWC
Ireland may know little about cover drives and catches at silly point but that didn't prevent it from almost racking up a cricket score of its own against Namibia in their Rugby World Cup match on Sunday night.
While the Zimbabwean cricketers had earlier battled solidly against Australia next door at the SCG, their fellow Africans couldn't quite hold up their end at Aussie Stadium this evening, going down to the Irish 64-7.
Ireland attempted an expansive game despite the driving rain, garnering mixed results as the backs chanced their arms on the slippery pitch.
It made for a sometimes frustrating game as the Emerald Green scored ten tries but dropped plenty of ball as well.
The win, which included a four-try bonus point after just 32 minutes, eclipsed Ireland's biggest World Cup win of 53-8 against the US at the last World Cup.
Ireland hooker and captain Keith Wood said his team had done well in conditions that were "absolutely horrendous".
"The conditions were bloody awful, there were guys falling all over the place," Wood said.
"But we can take an awful lot out of the game, I was fairly happy."
Former Australian prop Adrian Skeggs was drafted in to assist training the Namibian pack during the week but it failed to help Sunday night as the Africans were over run by a hungry Irish pack.
With the forwards consistently undisciplined at the breakdown, referee Andrew Cole eventually yellow-carded second-rower Heino Senekal for repeated infringements, handing the Irish a one-man advantage midway through the first half.
