Socceroo striker Archie Thompson's future is likely to become clearer after the Melbourne Victory board meets to discuss a transfer offer from European giant PSV Eindhoven.

Thompson's move from the A-League club to last season's Champions League semi-finalist - coached by Socceroos boss Guus Hiddink - is expected to be confirmed some time this week.

Victory has refused to disclose details of the offer.

But a club spokesman said chairman Geoff Lord and football operations manager Gary Cole would meet to consider whether to accept it, or bargain further with the Dutch club.

If Thompson is sold to PSV as appears certain, he would link with Hiddink and the Dutch champion's other recent Aussie signing - Socceroos midfielder Jason Culina.

It would also give Thompson the opportunity of playing in the world's best club competition, the European Champions League.

Thompson, just six months into a four-year deal with the Victory, is also desperate for the once in a lifetime opportunity the transfer would bring.

The Victory's hopes of making the A-League finals are now slim at best after a 1-0 loss to Adelaide United last week, though it could still be in with a chance of making the final four if it beats Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

If the Victory sells Thompson for what is expected to be at least a six-figure sum, it would be a tidy return as he cost Melbourne nothing to sign from Belgian side Lierse after he came out of contract in May.

He has been arguably the A-League's best player, scoring seven goals - including possibly the goal of the season against Sydney FC in October.
