Victory held at home in A-League
Melbourne Victory's goal drought continued as their wasted chances allowed Newcastle to escape with a 0-0 draw in Friday night's A-League match at Olympic Park.
It was the Victory's third straight match without scoring and the team has now gone more than five hours of playing time without a goal.
The Victory, who had lost their last three games before Friday night, dominated the match with the Jets seemingly content to play the game mainly in their defensive half with only the occasional attacking thrust.
While Melbourne enjoyed the most possession it clearly missed the penetration of Socceroos striker Archie Thompson, the Victory's top-scorer who is in South America with the Australian team.
The closest Melbourne came to scoring was in the 77th minute, when substitute Ricky Diaco fired a left-foot shot from just outside the penalty box which hit the outside of the net.
Attacking midfielder Richard Kitzbichler was the Victory's most creative player, and made some scything runs into attack, particularly in the second half, but had little help.
Daniel Allsopp, who took over the striker's role in Thompson's absence, was often hesitant going into attack, and caused the Newcastle defence few problems.
Kitzbichler's best chance came two minutes into the second half, when he made a strong run into the box and hit a solid left-foot shot, which was blocked by Newcastle keeper Liam Reddy.
He also set up Diaco with a good opportunity 15 minutes from fulltime when he followed a weaving run through the defence with a low cross from the right side.
The ball passed across the goal-front with Diaco narrowly failing to get his right foot to it.
